Types of Foundation Excavation We Handle
- Full Basement Excavation
Excavating a full basement footprint to 8 to 10 feet below grade, depending on the plan. We remove soil, shape the pit to the correct dimensions, level the bottom, and create ramps for the foundation crew to access the work area. Spoils are stockpiled on-site for backfill or hauled off if not needed. Full basements are the most common residential foundation type in Central New York.
- Footing & Frost Wall Excavation
Trenching for continuous footings and frost walls to the required depth below the frost line. In this area, that means a minimum of 48 inches below finished grade for exterior footings. We trench to the dimensions specified in the plans, keeping the trench clean and stable for forming.
- Crawlspace & Slab Preparation
Crawlspace excavation to the specified depth with enough clearance for access and mechanical systems. Slab-on-grade preparation includes subgrade excavation, grading, compaction, and gravel base placement. We match the elevation and compaction requirements specified by your engineer or builder.
- Addition & Garage Foundation Excavation
Digging for additions, garages, workshops, and outbuildings adjacent to or near existing structures. Working close to an existing foundation requires careful equipment operation to avoid disturbing the existing bearing soil. We protect the existing structure while excavating the new foundation to the correct depth and dimensions.

A foundation that is off by two inches in any direction creates problems for every trade that follows: framing, plumbing, electrical, and finish work. We dig to the dimensions on the plan, verify with the surveyor’s stakes, and check grade with laser equipment before the foundation crew mobilizes.

In Central New York, footings that do not extend below the 48-inch frost line will heave during winter, cracking the foundation and the structure above it. We dig to the frost depth required by the local building code every time. This is not optional in this climate.

What Foundation Excavation Includes
The exact scope depends on your plans, but a typical foundation excavation includes:
Site access and preparation: We establish equipment access, protect existing features (driveways, utilities, landscaping), and set up the work area. On new construction sites, this step follows site preparation and land clearing.
Excavation to plan: Digging the foundation footprint to the correct depth, width, and shape as specified in the building plans. Full basements, crawlspaces, footings, frost walls, and slabs each have different excavation profiles.
Rock and ledge removal: If bedrock or ledge is encountered, we remove it with hydraulic breakers or other heavy equipment to reach the required depth.
Subgrade preparation: Leveling the bottom of the excavation and compacting as needed to provide a stable bearing surface for the footings.
Spoils management: Excavated soil is stockpiled on-site for backfill after the foundation is poured, or hauled off-site if excess material is not needed.
Utility coordination: Foundation excavation often overlaps with water, sewer, and drain line installation. We coordinate with your plumber and utility installer to get the pipe in the ground while the excavation is open.
Backfill after pour: Once the foundation is poured, stripped, and waterproofed, we return to backfill around the walls, compact in lifts, and grade the surface for proper drainage away from the structure.

Hale Excavation LLC is a new venture led by Eric Hale, who brings extensive experience in landfill construction, environmental remediation, road construction, and federal projects. He has worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service, the Air Force, and major environmental firms throughout his career.

Laborer & Surveyor

Eric returned from the Army to work full-time in construction while staying in the Army Reserves. Joined the apprenticeship program to become a certified operating engineer during this project (completed 1997, a certification he still holds).

What happens if you hit rock during the dig?
We remove it. Rock and ledge excavation is part of our capability. We use hydraulic breakers and heavy equipment to break and remove rock to the required depth. If rock is discovered, we will communicate the scope change immediately so you can plan accordingly.
Do you handle backfill after the foundation is poured?
Yes. After the foundation is poured, cured, stripped, and waterproofed, we return to backfill around the walls. We compact in lifts to prevent settling and grade the surface so water drains away from the foundation.
