Pool Removal Services in Oneida County & Central New York
Fill It In or Take It Out. Either Way, the Pool Problem Is Solved.
Pool removal and fill-in services in Oneida County and Central New York. Partial removal, full removal, backfill, compaction, and site grading.
Pool Removal Across Central New York
In-ground pools in Central New York face a unique set of challenges. The swimming season is short, but the maintenance cost runs year-round. Freeze-thaw cycles crack concrete shells and damage vinyl liners. Aging equipment fails. Eventually, many homeowners reach the point where the pool costs more to keep than it is worth, and they want it gone.
Hale Excavation is a veteran-owned, licensed, and insured contractor with over 35 years of construction experience. We remove inground pools of all types: concrete, vinyl liner, and fiberglass. We also remove above-ground pools and restore the site underneath. Whether the goal is to sell the property, build something new on the site, or simply reclaim the yard, we handle the full scope from demolition through final grading.
We serve homeowners, property investors, HOAs, and commercial property owners throughout Oneida County, Herkimer County, Madison County, and surrounding communities. Free estimates, free second opinions, and free consultations on every pool removal project.
Signs You Need Pool Removal
The Pool Has Not Been Used in Years and Costs Money to Maintain
An unused pool still requires chemical treatment, cover maintenance, and winterization in Central New York. If the pool has been sitting idle for multiple seasons and you have no plans to reopen it, removal eliminates the ongoing cost and liability.
You Are Selling the Property and the Pool Is a Liability, Not an Asset
In many markets, an aging or poorly maintained pool reduces property value instead of adding to it. Buyers see ongoing maintenance costs, safety liability, and insurance implications. Removing the pool before listing can make the property easier to sell and may increase the effective sale price.
The Pool Structure Is Cracked, Leaking, or Failing
A concrete pool that is cracking, a liner that leaks constantly, or a fiberglass shell that is shifting means the pool has reached the end of its useful life. Repairing a structurally compromised pool is often more expensive than removing it.
New Construction Requires the Pool Footprint
An addition, garage, patio, or other new construction sometimes needs to occupy the space where the pool sits. Full pool removal clears the footprint and allows new construction to proceed on stable, compacted ground.
The Pool Creates a Safety or Insurance Concern
Open or poorly fenced pools create drowning risk, especially on properties with children or where the property is not consistently occupied. Insurance companies may charge higher premiums or require expensive safety upgrades. Removal eliminates the risk.
Types of Pool Removal We Handle
- Partial Pool Removal (Collapse and Fill)
The most common and most cost-effective option. We punch holes in the bottom of the pool shell for drainage, collapse the upper walls inward, and backfill the cavity with clean fill material in lifts, compacting as we go. The top 2 to 3 feet of the shell walls are removed so no concrete sits close to the surface. The area is then graded for proper drainage. Partial removal is appropriate when no new construction will sit on the pool footprint.
- Full Pool Removal (Complete Excavation)
The entire pool shell is excavated, broken up, loaded, and hauled off-site. The resulting pit is backfilled with clean material, compacted in lifts, and graded. Full removal is required when new construction (a building, foundation, or paved surface) will occupy the pool footprint, because the compacted fill must support structural loads. Full removal costs more and generates more material to haul, but it leaves the site clear to build on.
- Above-Ground Pool Removal & Site Restoration
Removing the pool structure, deck, fencing, and equipment, then restoring the ground underneath. Above-ground pools often sit on compacted sand or gravel pads that need to be regraded or removed, depending on what comes next. We disassemble or demolish the pool, haul the materials, and grade the area level with the surrounding yard.
- Commercial Pool Removal
Hotels, motels, apartment complexes, HOA communities, and recreational facilities with pools that are no longer in use or are being replaced. Commercial pool removal often involves larger structures, more complex permitting, and coordination with the property management team. We handle the full scope, including demolition, disposal, backfill, and site restoration.
Why Professional Pool Removal Matters
Proper Drainage Prevents the Fill from Becoming a Pond
A pool shell is designed to hold water. If you fill it without punching drainage holes in the bottom, the fill material sits in a concrete bowl that collects groundwater and rainwater with no way to drain. We punch holes through the shell bottom to allow water to percolate into the soil below, preventing the fill area from becoming a waterlogged sinkhole.
Compacted Fill Prevents Settling
A pool cavity filled with loose material will settle over time, creating a depression in the yard. We backfill in lifts (typically 12 to 18 inches at a time), compacting each lift before adding the next. Proper compaction means the surface stays level for years instead of sinking within a few seasons.
Documented Removal Protects You at Resale
In New York, sellers are required to disclose known material facts about a property. A pool that was removed should be documented: the removal method, the fill material, and the compaction process. We provide this information so you have a record for future buyers, inspectors, and title companies.
The Yard Becomes Functional Again
An old pool, its equipment pad, the surrounding deck, and the fencing take up a large portion of the yard. Removing all of it and grading the area flat returns that space to usable lawn, garden, patio, or buildable area. The property looks better, functions better, and is easier to maintain.
What Pool Removal Includes
The scope depends on the removal method and pool type, but typical pool removal includes:
Draining: Pumping any remaining water from the pool. Water is discharged to an approved location in compliance with local requirements.
Equipment and deck removal: Disconnecting and removing the pump, filter, heater, plumbing, electrical connections, and surrounding deck or hardscape. Equipment is hauled off-site.
Shell demolition (partial removal): Punching drainage holes through the pool floor, collapsing the upper 2 to 3 feet of walls, and breaking them into the cavity.
Shell excavation (full removal): Breaking up the entire pool shell with hydraulic breakers, loading it into dump trucks, and hauling it to disposal or recycling.
Backfill: Filling the cavity with clean fill material (typically a mixture of gravel and compactable fill) in lifts. Each lift is compacted before the next is placed.
Compaction: Mechanical compaction of every fill lift to prevent future settling. This is the most important step in the process and the one most often skipped by less experienced contractors.
Final grading: Grading the filled area level with the surrounding yard and establishing positive drainage away from any nearby structures. Topsoil is placed on top, and the area is prepared for seeding.

How much does pool removal cost?
Cost depends on the pool size, type (concrete, vinyl, fiberglass), removal method (partial vs. full), and site access. Partial removal is less expensive than full removal because less material is hauled off-site. We provide free on-site estimates with a clear breakdown.
What is the difference between partial and full pool removal?
Partial removal collapses the walls, punches drainage holes, and backfills the shell in place. Full removal excavates and hauls away the entire shell. Partial is less expensive and appropriate for yard use. Full removal is required if new construction will sit on the pool footprint.
Do I need a permit for pool removal?
Permit requirements vary by municipality. Some towns require a demolition permit for pool removal. We help identify what is needed and coordinate the permit process.
Will the area settle after pool removal?
If the backfill is placed and compacted properly, settling should be minimal. We compact in lifts specifically to prevent this. Loose fill dumped into the cavity without compaction will settle significantly, which is why compaction in lifts is not optional.
