It Addresses Asbestos Requirements Before Work Begins
New York State requires an asbestos survey for any building constructed before 1980 that is scheduled for demolition. If asbestos-containing materials are found, they must be professionally removed before demolition can proceed. We coordinate asbestos evaluations and abatement scheduling so the project stays compliant and on track.

Demolition debris must be transported to licensed disposal facilities. Some materials (concrete, metal, and clean wood) can be recycled. Hazardous materials require separate handling. We sort materials where practical, haul everything to appropriate facilities, and provide documentation when required for permit closeout.
What Structure Demolition Includes
The scope depends on the structure, but a typical building demolition includes:
Pre-demolition evaluation: Assessing the structure type, construction materials, proximity to adjacent buildings, utility connections, and potential hazards. Determining whether an asbestos survey is required.
Permitting: Obtaining demolition permits from the local municipality. Coordinating utility disconnection with the electric, gas, water, and sewer providers.
Asbestos coordination (if required): Scheduling the asbestos survey for pre-1980 buildings. If asbestos is found, coordinating abatement with a licensed asbestos removal contractor before demolition begins.
Structure takedown: Using excavators and heavy equipment to dismantle the structure in a controlled sequence. Working from the top down, managing debris fall zones, and controlling dust.
Foundation removal (if required): After the structure is down, removing the foundation walls and floor slab if the site plan calls for it. Some projects leave the foundation in place and backfill over it.
Debris loading and haul-off: Loading all demolition debris onto dump trucks and transporting it to licensed disposal or recycling facilities. Metal is separated for recycling.
Backfill and site grading: Filling any open pits (foundation holes, basement cavities), compacting the fill, and grading the surface for proper drainage. The site is left clean, level, and ready for new construction or open use.

Hale Excavation LLC is a new venture led by Eric Hale, who brings extensive experience in landfill construction, environmental remediation, road construction, and federal projects. He has worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service, the Air Force, and major environmental firms throughout his career.

Laborer & Surveyor
- Auburn, NY · Cayuga County
Eric returned from the Army to work full-time in construction while staying in the Army Reserves. Joined the apprenticeship program to become a certified operating engineer during this project (completed 1997, a certification he still holds).

Constructed leachate collection and site drainage in 1994–95. Landfill closure completed in 1996. Gas removal windmill built in 1997. Eric worked across all phases of this multi-year project.

How much does building demolition cost?
Cost depends on the structure size, construction type, hazard evaluation results, foundation removal requirements, and haul-off distance. A small wood-frame garage and a two-story brick house are very different scopes. We provide free on-site estimates with a clear breakdown.
Do I need an asbestos survey before demolition?
In New York, any building constructed before 1980 requires an asbestos survey before demolition. If asbestos-containing materials are identified, they must be removed by a licensed abatement contractor before we can demolish the structure. We coordinate this process as part of the project.
How long does building demolition take?
A small outbuilding or garage can often be demolished and hauled off in a single day. A full house demolition with foundation removal and site grading typically takes 3 to 5 days. Commercial buildings vary based on size and complexity. We provide a timeline estimate with every quote.
Do you remove the foundation too?
If required. Some projects call for complete foundation removal so the site is clear for new construction. Others leave the foundation in place and backfill over it. We discuss this during the estimate and include it in the scope if needed.
