Commercial Mowing Services in Oneida County & Central New York
Not Lawn Care. Site Mowing with Equipment Built for the Job.
Commercial and municipal mowing in Oneida County and Central New York. Heavy-duty mowing for parking lots, industrial sites, retention areas, vacant lots, and municipal properties
Commercial Mowing Across Central New York
This is not residential lawn care. Commercial mowing means cutting tall grass, heavy brush, and overgrown vegetation on properties that a standard push mower or riding mower cannot handle. Retention basins that need to be mowed for stormwater compliance. Industrial facility perimeters that have grown waist-high. Vacant lots that are drawing code violations. Highway shoulders and municipal rights-of-way must be maintained on a schedule.
Hale Excavation is a veteran-owned, licensed, and insured contractor with over 35 years of construction experience. We use tractor-mounted brush mowers, skid steer-mounted rotary cutters, and commercial-grade mowing equipment designed for rough terrain, tall growth, and large areas. This is the same class of equipment we use for land clearing and site maintenance, applied to scheduled and on-demand mowing.
We serve commercial property owners, property managers, municipalities, industrial facilities, and HOAs throughout Oneida County, Herkimer County, Madison County, and the surrounding region. Scheduled mowing contracts (weekly, biweekly, or monthly) and on-demand service are both available. Free consultations on mowing contracts for any commercial or municipal property.
Signs You Need Commercial Mowing
Your Property Is Too Large or Too Rough for a Lawn Service
Standard lawn care companies are equipped for residential yards. When the property is 5 acres, 20 acres, or more, when the terrain is rough and uneven, or when the vegetation is too tall and thick for a mower deck, you need commercial-grade equipment and an operator experienced on large sites.
Your Retention Basin or Stormwater Area Needs Mowing for Compliance
Detention and retention basins, stormwater management areas, and drainage swales require regular mowing as part of their maintenance obligations. Overgrown basins can trigger code violations and reduce the system’s ability to manage water flow. We mow these areas on a schedule that keeps them compliant.
A Vacant Lot or Undeveloped Parcel Is Overgrown
Vacant properties accumulate tall grass, weeds, and brush quickly during the Central New York growing season. Overgrown lots attract complaints, code violations, and pest issues. Regular mowing keeps the property presentable, compliant, and ready for sale or development.
Your Municipality Needs Roadside, Park, or Right-of-Way Mowingdiation Earthwork
Towns, villages, and counties maintain highway shoulders, parkland, public rights-of-way, and facility grounds. When the scope exceeds what in-house crews can handle, we provide contract mowing with the heavy equipment to cover large areas on a reliable schedule.
Your Industrial or Commercial Site Needs Perimeter and Buffer Mowing
Industrial facilities, warehouses, and commercial properties maintain perimeter areas, buffer zones, and open land around the facility. Overgrown perimeters create fire risk, pest habitat, and a poor appearance for visitors and inspectors. Scheduled mowing keeps the site maintained.
Types of Commercial Mowing We Provide
- Commercial Property Mowing
Scheduled mowing of facility grounds, parking lot perimeters, building frontage, and common areas for commercial properties, office parks, retail centers, and multi-tenant buildings. We mow on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly schedule, depending on the growth rate and your appearance requirements.
- Municipal & Highway Mowing
Roadside shoulder mowing, park and recreation area mowing, public facility grounds maintenance, and right-of-way clearing for towns, villages, and counties. Municipal mowing contracts are scheduled to maintain safety sight lines, comply with maintenance standards, and keep public areas presentable.
- Vacant Lot & Field Mowing
Periodic mowing of vacant lots, undeveloped parcels, agricultural fields (non-crop), and unused land. This service keeps properties in compliance with local weed and vegetation ordinances, prevents brush encroachment, and maintains the property for future sale or development.
- Retention Area & Stormwater Basin Mowing
Mowing detention basins, retention areas, drainage swales, and stormwater management areas as required by the maintenance plan. These areas typically need mowing 3 to 6 times per season to keep vegetation at an acceptable height and allow the system to function as designed.
Why Commercial Mowing Matters
It Keeps Your Property in Compliance
Many municipalities in Oneida County and the surrounding area have vegetation ordinances that require property owners to keep grass and weeds below a specified height. Retention areas and stormwater basins have their own maintenance requirements. Scheduled mowing prevents violations and the fines that come with them.
It Reduces Fire and Safety Hazards
Tall, dry grass and brush around buildings, equipment, and storage areas create fire risk. Overgrown areas near roads and intersections reduce visibility for drivers. Unmaintained perimeters harbor rodents, ticks, and other pests. Regular mowing controls all of these hazards.
It Maintains a Professional Appearance
The condition of your grounds is the first thing visitors, customers, and inspectors see. A well-maintained property signals professionalism. An overgrown property signals neglect. For commercial properties, appearance affects customer perception and leasing potential.
It Prevents Small Growth from Becoming a Clearing Job
Grass and weeds left unmowed for a full season become saplings and brush by the following year. What starts as a mowing job turns into a land-clearing project if it is neglected long enough. Scheduled mowing stops the progression before it requires heavier equipment.
What Commercial Mowing Includes
Service levels depend on the property and contract, but typical commercial mowing includes:
Site assessment: Evaluating the property size, terrain, vegetation type, and any obstacles (ditches, culverts, fencing, signage) that affect mowing access and equipment selection.
Equipment selection: Matching the right equipment to the job. Small commercial lots may use standard commercial mowers. Large fields, rough terrain, and heavy growth require tractor-mounted brush mowers or skid steer-mounted rotary cutters.
Scheduled mowing: Cutting vegetation on the agreed schedule (weekly, biweekly, monthly, or seasonal). We adjust frequency based on growth rate and seasonal conditions.
Trimming and edge work: Trimming around buildings, fencing, signage, and other obstacles that the mowing equipment cannot reach.
Debris management: Clearing any debris, branches, or trash encountered during mowing. On large rural properties, we handle fallen branches and minor deadfall as part of the service.
Reporting (for contract clients): Confirming service completion after each visit. Municipal and multi-site contracts include documentation of dates and areas serviced.

Related Services
Commercial mowing is part of our year-round maintenance offering. We also handle site maintenance, drainage upkeep, and landfill maintenance under recurring contracts.
The winter complement to summer mowing. One contractor for both seasons simplifies vendor management and keeps your property covered year-round.
When the growth has gone too far for mowing, land clearing brings the property back to a manageable state. We then transition to scheduled mowing to keep it that way.

Eric returned from the Army to work full-time in construction while staying in the Army Reserves. Joined the apprenticeship program to become a certified operating engineer during this project (completed 1997, a certification he still holds).
1993
Laborer · Surveyor · Heavy Equipment Operator
- Malone, NY · Franklin County
Eric took on expanded field responsibilities on this project, working across three trades: laborer, surveyor, and heavy equipment operator.
1994
Laborer · Surveyor · Heavy Equipment Operator
- Frankfort, NY · Herkimer County
Constructed leachate collection and site drainage in 1994–95. Landfill closure completed in 1996. Gas removal windmill built in 1997. Eric worked across all phases of this multi-year project.
1998
Superintendent (First Time)
- Sodus, NY · Wayne County
Eric’s first job as a project superintendent — the beginning of his transition from the field to project leadership.
2008

Serving Central New York and the Mohawk Valley
From Utica and Rome through the Mohawk Valley, north into Lewis County, west across Onondaga, south into Chenango and Cortland — we work the full Central New York region. Our home base is Sauquoit, and our standard service radius is one to two hours from Utica. For the right project, we travel further.
How much does commercial mowing cost?
Cost depends on the property size, terrain, vegetation type, access, and frequency. A 2-acre commercial lot mowed weekly and a 50-acre municipal property mowed monthly are very different scopes. We provide free on-site evaluations and written proposals.
How often should a commercial property be mowed?
Most commercial properties need weekly or biweekly mowing during the growing season (May through October in Central New York). Retention areas and vacant lots may only need monthly or 4 to 6 times per season. We set the frequency based on your needs and growth conditions.
Do you offer year-round property maintenance contracts?
Yes. We pair commercial mowing with snow removal under a single maintenance contract. One contractor for summer grounds and winter snow, with one point of contact and one relationship. This is how most of our commercial and municipal clients structure their service.
Can you handle brush and heavy growth, not just grass?
Yes. Our tractor-mounted brush mowers and skid steer-mounted rotary cutters handle tall grass, thick weeds, brush, and small saplings. If the growth has progressed beyond what mowing equipment can handle, we transition to land clearing.
How do I set up a commercial mowing contract?
Call us at (315) 982-3673 or contact us online. We visit the property, evaluate the scope, and provide a written proposal covering frequency, equipment, and pricing.
