You Are Building a New Home and Need Water and Sewer Connected
New construction requires a water service line from the municipal main or well to the house, and a sewer lateral from the house to the municipal main or septic system. We install both during the foundation and site work phase, coordinating with the plumber and builder.
Your Water Pressure Has Dropped or You See Water Surfacing in the Yard
A sudden drop in water pressure or water bubbling up from the ground often indicates a water service line break. Corrosion, tree root intrusion, ground movement, and freeze damage all cause water line failures. The line needs to be exposed and repaired or replaced.
Sewage Is Backing Up Into the House or Surfacing in the Yard

We trench to the required depth (below the frost line in Central New York), bed the pipe on clean stone, make the connection, backfill in lifts, compact, and restore the surface. We install copper, polyethylene, and HDPE water lines depending on the application and local requirements.

Installing new sewer laterals for new construction, or replacing failed laterals on existing properties. Sewer pipe must maintain a consistent grade (typically 1/4 inch per foot minimum) to keep waste moving by gravity. We trench, bed, lay pipe, make connections, and backfill to specification. We install PVC, SDR-35, and HDPE sewer pipe depending on depth, loading, and local code.

In Central New York, water lines must be buried below the frost line, which is typically 48 inches below grade. A water line buried too shallow will freeze during winter, cutting off water supply and potentially splitting the pipe. We trench to the correct depth every time.

What Water & Sewer Line Work Includes
The scope depends on the project, but a typical water and sewer line installation includes:
811 locate request: Before any digging, we call 811 to have existing underground utilities marked. This protects gas, electric, water, sewer, cable, and phone lines from accidental damage.
Excavation: Trenching from the main or connection point to the building at the required depth and width. Water lines require frost-depth cover. Sewer lines require a consistent slope.
Bedding: Placing clean stone or gravel at the bottom of the trench to support the pipe and prevent settling on sharp objects or uneven surfaces.
Pipe installation: Laying the pipe at the correct grade, making connections at both ends, and installing cleanouts, valves, or fittings as specified.
Testing: Pressure-testing water lines and grade-verifying sewer lines before inspection. Any leaks or grade issues are corrected before backfill.
Inspection: Scheduling the municipal or code inspection. The trench remains open for the inspector to verify material, grade, connections, and cover depth.
Backfill and compaction: Filling the trench in lifts with approved material, compacting each lift to prevent settling. Proper compaction is critical under driveways, roads, and walkways.
Surface restoration: Restoring the surface above the trench: re-grading lawn areas, replacing gravel driveways, patching pavement, or preparing the surface for the next construction phase.

Hale Excavation LLC is a new venture led by Eric Hale, who brings extensive experience in landfill construction, environmental remediation, road construction, and federal projects. He has worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service, the Air Force, and major environmental firms throughout his career.

Eric returned from the Army to work full-time in construction while staying in the Army Reserves. Joined the apprenticeship program to become a certified operating engineer during this project (completed 1997, a certification he still holds).
