What Land Clearing Includes
The scope depends on the property and your project, but a typical land clearing job includes:
Tree felling: Cutting down trees within the clearing limits using excavation equipment or chainsaws. Trees are felled in a controlled direction to avoid damage to surrounding areas.
Stump extraction: Pulling stumps and root balls with an excavator. Full extraction is preferred over grinding when the area will be graded, built on, or trenched for utilities.
Brush cutting and removal: Clearing all undergrowth, saplings, invasive vegetation, and dead material. Brush is piled for chipping, burning (where permitted), or hauling off-site.
Grubbing: Removing roots, organic material, and debris from the top layer of soil to create a clean mineral surface suitable for construction. Grubbing follows stump extraction and is required before grading on most construction sites.
Topsoil stripping and stockpiling: Stripping the organic topsoil layer and stockpiling it on-site for later use on landscaped areas, ditchlines, and restored surfaces.
Debris loading and haul-off: Loading all cleared material onto dump trucks and transporting it to approved disposal or recycling sites. Clean wood can be left for the landowner if requested.
Rough grading: After clearing, we rough-grade the surface to establish basic drainage and access for the next phase of construction.

Three Decades of Major Project Experience
Hale Excavation LLC is a new venture led by Eric Hale, who brings extensive experience in landfill construction, environmental remediation, road construction, and federal projects. He has worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service, the Air Force, and major environmental firms throughout his career.

Laborer & Surveyor
- Auburn, NY · Cayuga County
Eric returned from the Army to work full-time in construction while staying in the Army Reserves. Joined the apprenticeship program to become a certified operating engineer during this project (completed 1997, a certification he still holds).

Constructed leachate collection and site drainage in 1994–95. Landfill closure completed in 1996. Gas removal windmill built in 1997. Eric worked across all phases of this multi-year project.

Cost depends on acreage, tree density, stump count, terrain, access, and haul-off distance. A lightly wooded half-acre lot and a heavily forested 5-acre parcel are very different scopes. We provide free on-site estimates with a clear breakdown.
How long does land clearing take?
A typical residential lot (half acre to one acre) with moderate tree coverage can usually be cleared in 1 to 3 days. Larger parcels or heavily wooded sites take longer. We provide a timeline estimate with every quote.
Can you clear only part of my property?
Yes. Selective clearing is one of the most common requests we receive. We clear the building envelope, driveway route, or septic area while leaving the rest of the property wooded. We walk the limits with you before work begins.
What happens to the trees and brush after clearing?
Trees are cut, loaded, and hauled to disposal or recycling sites. Clean wood can be left on-site for the landowner. Brush is chipped, hauled, or burned where local regulations allow. Stumps and root balls are hauled off-site or buried on the property if conditions permit.
