Signs You Septic System Needs Repair
Sewage Is Backing Up Into the House
Multiple drains failing at once, toilets not flushing, or sewage coming up through basement floor drains. This is the most urgent sign of septic failure. Sewage Odor or Wet Ground Above the Septic Tank or Lines
If you smell sewage in the yard or see wet, spongy ground above where the tank, lines, or distribution box are buried, the system is leaking. A cracked tank, broken pipe joint, or failed D-box allows effluent to escape into the surrounding soil before it reaches the leach field.
The Tank Needs Pumping Far More Often Than Normal
A healthy septic tank should be pumped every 3 to 5 years for a typical household. If you are pumping every year or more often and the tank fills back up quickly, the outlet may be blocked, the baffle may have failed, or the leach field may not be accepting effluent. The system needs evaluation, not just more pumping.
Drains Are Slow Throughout the Entire House
Slow drains in one fixture usually point to a localized plumbing issue. Slow drains throughout the house point to the septic system. The tank may be full, the outlet line may be partially blocked, or the distribution box may be failing.
You Know the System Is Old and Has Never Been Serviced
Older systems with concrete tanks, clay pipe, or no risers eventually deteriorate. Concrete tanks crack and leak. Clay pipe joints separate and allow root intrusion. Baffles corrode and fail. If the system is 30 or more years old and has never been evaluated, proactive inspection and repair can prevent a full failure.

- Septic Tank Replacement
When a tank is cracked, collapsed, or deteriorated beyond repair, it needs to be replaced. We excavate around the old tank, pump it, remove it, set the new tank at the correct elevation, reconnect all inlet and outlet lines, backfill, compact, and grade the surface. Tank replacement is often the most cost-effective repair when the leach field is still functioning.
- Septic Line & Distribution Box Repair
Broken or separated septic lines between the house and tank, between the tank and distribution box, or between the D-box and leach field. We locate the break, excavate to expose it, and repair or replace the damaged section. Distribution box failures are common on older systems and are usually replaced rather than repaired.
- Tank Locating, Dig-Up & Riser Installation
Many septic tanks are buried with no riser or access lid visible at the surface. When the tank needs pumping, inspection, or repair, someone has to find it and dig it up. We locate buried tanks, excavate to expose the lids, and install permanent risers so the tank is accessible from the surface for all future maintenance without digging again.
- Septic Abandonment & Closure
When a property connects to a municipal sewer or an old system is being decommissioned, the existing tank must be properly abandoned. We coordinate pumping, crush or remove the tank, backfill the pit with clean material, and compact to prevent settling. Abandonment must follow local code requirements to close the permit.

What Septic Repair Includes
The scope depends on the problem, but a typical septic repair includes:
Diagnosis: Identifying the failed component. We coordinate with your septic pumper if the tank needs to be pumped before inspection. We excavate to access the tank, lines, or distribution box to visually confirm the failure point.
Excavation: Digging to the failed component with excavation equipment. We work carefully to avoid damaging adjacent components that are still functioning.
Repair or replacement: Replacing the failed tank, pipe section, distribution box, baffle, or riser. We use materials that match or exceed the original system specifications.
Reconnection and testing: Reconnecting all lines and components, verifying grade and flow, and confirming the system is functioning before backfill.
Pumper coordination (if needed): Scheduling the septic pumper to pump the tank before or during the repair. For emergency calls, we coordinate this as part of the mobilization.
Backfill, compaction, and grading: Filling the excavation, compacting in lifts, and grading the surface for proper drainage. We restore the disturbed area so it is clean and usable.

Hale Excavation LLC is a new venture led by Eric Hale, who brings extensive experience in landfill construction, environmental remediation, road construction, and federal projects. He has worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service, the Air Force, and major environmental firms throughout his career.

Eric returned from the Army to work full-time in construction while staying in the Army Reserves. Joined the apprenticeship program to become a certified operating engineer during this project (completed 1997, a certification he still holds).

How do I know if my septic system needs repair or replacement?
It depends on the age of the system and which components have failed. A cracked line or failed D-box can usually be repaired. A collapsed tank, failed leach field, or system that no longer meets code typically needs full or partial replacement. We diagnose the problem and recommend the most cost-effective solution.
How much does septic repair cost?
Cost varies widely depending on the problem. A riser installation or line repair is far less expensive than a full tank replacement. We provide a clear estimate after diagnosing the issue. For emergencies, we discuss costs before dispatching.
Can you install a riser so I do not have to dig up the tank again?
Yes. We install permanent risers on every tank we access. A riser brings the access lid to the surface so the pumper can service the tank in the future without excavation. This is one of the most practical upgrades you can make to an older septic system.
